Greg Parish on the D.A.M. Classic Racing Laverda finished 2nd outright in the HMRAV Historic Road Race Titles, setting the fastest lap of the series for the Post Classic Unlimited Class in the final race at Broadford Raceway.

With little preparation time available because of other commitments the D.A.M. Laverda Team entered the final race using the same tyres that they had finished the International Classic at Phillip Island. “It was a worry running used tyres but a range of circumstances meant that we had no option.” Greg said. “ The Phillip Island circuit really destroys the left hand side of the tyre but the right is hardly used. Broadford works the opposite side of the tyre so I thought it would be OK.”

Being a late entry the team missed out on a pit garage and were relegated to the carpark. A pop-up tent, a tarp on the ground and a 2 stroke generator to run the battery charger and tyre warmers completed a very 1980s style pit. “Sleeping under the stars beside the racebike really was a return to ‘the good old days’, except we didn’t ride the bike to the circuit this time.”

Amongst the fastest of the Japanese 1000cc Hondas, Kawasaki and Suzuki, the orange Laverda drew great support from the crowd as it carved its way through to the front runners. “It was great for me to come back to the circuit where I had so much success and still be able to cut it with the younger blokes on the Japanese bikes. Angus’ support and prep of the DAM bike was fantastic and everything just ran like clockwork all weekend.”

“I think that the laps that I’ve done around here on the Drysdale V8 at the HBBB weekends certainly helped acquaint myself with the new layout, but riding a Laverda here is something very different. The bike just loves it!

Finishing second was great because the T-Rex Hondas are incredibly fast and the winning bikes owner tells me his bike’s engine only has a life of 30 hrs. As soon as they see the straight they just gain 5 metres on me every gear change so that makes hard braking and corner speed the only way to make up time. Nothing new in that!”
